Shimbashi Station Building

Shimbashi Station Building is located at the north side of JR East Shimbashi Station.

This building has a special history. After WWII, this area was occupied , in some cases illegally, by people who lost their houses by the carpet bomb by US Air Force. They built meager houses , or barracks, to shelter from sunshine and rain, and ran very small shops to eke out a living. But, as Japan’s economy recovered and grew, the local government decided to clear this area and to build a large building to house those people. After 20 years from the end of WWII, this building opened. That is why the tenants of this building have a special atmosphere.
