Shinjuku West

changing Tokyo

The area “Shinjuku West” extends from the west gate of Shinjuku Station (though Shinjuku Station is too large to identify where the west gate is) toward the west. This area was turned from the main water reservoir for Tokyo to the first business area for skyscrapers in Tokyo 50 years ago. Since then this area has been the symbol for modern Tokyo, but recently it seems that our time has outstripped this area. The space between the skyscrapers are too large, and the structure of this area is optimized for cars, not for pedestrians. Gradually people came uninterested with this area.

But the city planners of Shinjuku has finally started to “reconstruct” this area. Their goal is to change this area human-friendly. I believe in ten years this area will become the “icon of modern Tokyo” again.
