Nihonbashi has two meanings. One is the name of an area, the oldest shopping and commercial area in Tokyo which dates back to 400 years ago. The other is the name of a bridge, which was the starting point of all roads in Japan in Tokugawa era. In fact, “Nihonbashi” means “Japan Bridge”.
This photo shows the latter one, Nihonbashi bridge. Be careful that Nihonbashi bridge is the bottom one, which passes over a canal dug in Tokugawa era. The upper bridge belongs to Tokyo Metropolitan highway. 50 years ago the upper bridge was constructed over the historic Nihonbashi bridge. But it is planned that the upper bridge be removed within 15 years. After that , the most famous bridge must regain not only sunshine but also the respect for itself.
