Shinagawa Station East Side

changing Tokyo

When Shinagawa Station opened as one of the first railway stations in Japan in 1872, just four years after Meiji Restoration, the east side of this station was the seashore of Tokyo Bay. After that, in tandem with the development of Japan and Tokyo, this side became a landfill site , and became a big industrial area with warehouses and small factories. It is just 30 years ago when this area started to change into one of the main business areas in Tokyo.

It looks like there is little room for this area for new development. But in fact, this area is now under the epoch-making change . Under the ground, they are constructing the terminal station of Maglev train , or magnetic-levitation train. Maglev train, which connects Tokyo and Nagoya for 40 minutes, is planned to open in five years, though the schedule is running late. After the opening, this area is sure to become one of the symbols not only for Tokyo but also for Japan.
