Isetan in Shinjuku is one of the biggest department stores not only in Tokyo but also in Japan. Most people in Tokyo call it “Shinjuku Isetan” . Indeed, this department store has been producing the largest sales amount among all of retail stores in Japan.
It is not surprising that even this invincible department store is suffering from the impact brought about by COVID-19. However, the veritable concern for department stores is the structual shift about the behaviors of Japanese consumers. They fear that COVID-19 is expediting this shift, urging consumers from retail stores to internet shopping. We will probably see soon whether this is the reality or not.
