Akasaka-Mitsuke

changing Tokyo

“Mitsuke” is an old word which means “guard house”. Akasaka-Mitsuke used to be one of the guard houses which surrounded Edo castle , the residence of Tokugawa Shogun and the current Royal Palace. But now Akasaka Mitsuke is an important junction at the heart of Tokyo for both subways and intracity expressways. When this interchange was constructed almost 60 years ago, it was the symbol of “modern Tokyo” and has been featured in many movies and TV dramas, including those by foreign studios. Though there are plenty of such scenes all over Japan now, Akasaka-Mitsuke still remains as a landmark which represents “modern Tokyo”.
