“Ameyoko” is the abbreviation of ” Ameya Yokocho”, which means “Lollipop Alley”. This shopping arcade is located alongside JR Yamanote Line between Ueno and Okachimachi.
In spite of its name, this alley sells everything at the “cheapest price”. This shopping arcade was born in the turmoil of post-WWII, when Tokyo was burned up by the carpet bomb. That is why this alley has the atmosphere of vitality, with no reliance on public support. You can see many shoppers even in Coronavirus Pandemic, probably because they share the same sense of independence and self-determination with this alley.
