Otemachi is with some reservations the center of Japan’s business, like Wall Street in New York . This is the north end of Otemachi area. It is intriguing that a vast area filled with skyscrapers housing world-scale corporates suddenly end at a canal which borders the north side of this area. I will feature the area beyond that border sometime, but today I would like to introduce to you the north part of Otemachi.
This area is located adjacent to the Royal Palace at its northeast. No doubt is this area a part of Otemachi, but it has its own characteristics. There are many buildings for public or semi-public use in this area, like fire and disaster agency, agricultural cooperative, and newspaper companies. This is the original style of Otemachi area, because after Meiji Restoration 150 years ago Otemachi had been used for Japan’s government offices. Kanto earthquake 100 years ago moved most of them to Kasumigaseki area ,but this area still keeps a few of them.
