Imperial Theatre is said to be the first Western-style theatre in Japan. Opened 110 years ago, this theatre gained popularity among new upper-class Japanese people who emerged at that time. After WWI, Japan experienced rapid industrial development and became one of the world powers at that time. Modern urban culture emerged in Tokyo and Osaka for the first time in Japan , which is the precedent of the current style of people in Tokyo. This theatre became one of the symbols of such culture at that time.
Now this theatre became less famous than before, but it still attracts many people in Tokyo. Especially, when famous young male groups or famous revue hold shows in this theatre, you can see long lines made up of female fans in front of the entrance.
