The first Shimbashi Station is located 3 minutes’ walk from the current Shimbashi station.This is also the first Tokyo Station , which was the start station of Japan’s first railroad which connected from Tokyo to Yokohama.
After Meiji Restoration in 1868, Japan’s new government gave railroad system the top priority to modernize Japan. Just after three years, the government started to construct the first railroad ,and just after two years, in 1872, it was completed. At that time Yokohama was the main port for Tokyo, so this railroad became the most important transportation system for Japan at that time. That is why Ginza street, which is still one of the main shopping streets, starts from this place. There is a museum which exhibits these stories in this building.
