Meiji-Gakuin University

Traditional Tokyo

Meiji-Gakuin University is one of the well-known universities in Tokyo. This university is the oldest missionary university in Tokyo. A few years before Meiji Restoration, an American educator and lay Christian missionary James Curtis Hepburn came to Japan and established this university. He is also famous in Japan because he introduced the standard of writing Japanese language by alphabets, known as “Hepburn romanization” .

Frankly speaking, there are many other famous universities in Tokyo. But this university characterizes itself with two reasons. One reason is that this university is located in Shrogane area, one of the high-class areas in Tokyo. The other reason is because of its beautiful campus with many historical school buildings and architectures.
