Probably you have heard the name of “Mitsukoshi”, arguably the most famous department store in Japan. It was already the largest store in the Tokugawa Shogunate era, at that time they sold clothing or garment items, that is, kimonos. After consumerism came to Japan 100 years ago, Mitsukoshi became the top brand department store for upper-middle class Japanese people. Though recent lifestyle shift urged Mitsukoshi merge with its competitor Isetan, the brand “Mitsukoshi” still keeps its prestige.
This photo shows the main store of Mitsukoshi, which is adjacent to Nihonbashi . This is the main store of Mitsukoshi not only because it is the largest store for Mitsukoshi, but also this store is located where its ancestor started their business some hundred years ago.
