Atago Shrine is located about 15 minutes’ walk from Shimbashi Station to the west. This shrine was established 400 years ago by Ieyasu Tokugawa, the founder of Tokugawa Shogunate.
What makes this shrine distinctive is its location. This shrine is located on the top of “Atago Hill”. Atago Hill is the highest place in the old Tokyo area (“Edo” area before Meiji restoration) with 26 meters. So this shrine had been a famous place to view the capital until just 50 years ago . There was also a broadcasting equipment next to this shrine when radio broadcasting was started in Japan 100 years ago. But now this shrine is looked down on by many high-rise buildings around this hill
