Shinagawa Station West Side

changing Tokyo

When Shinagawa Station opened 150 years ago, this station had only one gate on the west side of the railway, with a small building for passengers. This station building faced Tokaido road, the main road in Edo era which connected Edo (the current Tokyo) and Kyoto (where at that time the emperor lived). The current Shinagawa Station Building in the photo is the exact successor , which faces Route 1, the exact successor of Tokaido.

In these 30 years this building has been surpassed by that of the east side, but it is starting to compete again. In a few years , Keikyu Shinagawa station , located on the upper level which you can see in the photo, will be relocated to the ground level, and the wide pedestrian path will penetrate the upper level . Not only that. They will cover the west area of this station including Route 1, and lead the pedestrian path to the new deck. In addition to that, a new subway line will open from this area. This photo will be sure to be precious in a few years.
