Sotobori-Dori is the second inner loop of Tokyo next to Uchibori-Dori. It is also the same as Uchibori-Dori that some people call this street “Loop 2”, because this street runs along the outer moat of the imperial palace. It is not too much to say that Uchibori-Dori and Sotobori-Dori are like twins.
But, there are several differences between Uchibori-Dori and Sotobori-Dori . Firstly, one side of Uchibori-Dori faces imperial palace, but both sides of Sotobori-Dori are filled with high-rise buildings. That is because the inner land of Sotobori-Dori, which used to be the residence of Tokugawa Shogunate with its vassals, was confiscated at Meiji Restoration. Another difference is that Uchibori-Dori runs along the moat, but Sotobori-Dori runs on the previous moat in some cases. That means that some parts of Sotobori-Dori were constructed by turning the space of the moat into a street.
