Route 1

changing Tokyo

Route 1 means “National Highway Route 1”. Route 1 is the highway which starts at Tokyo Nihonbashi and ends at Osaka City. As you can imagine easily, this is the most important national highway which runs as the backbone of Japan’s population and economy.

This highway follows the route of Tokaido in Edo era. At that time this route was already the backbone of Japan. But it is after WWII when this route was well improved for cars .Though most of the cars moved to “Tomei Highway”,the real highway for cars only, Route 1 remains at the top notch of Japan’s highways.
