Metropolitan Expressway C1

changing Tokyo

There are several expressways over Tokyo. People in Tokyo call them “Shuto-Ko” (Shuto means ‘capital’. Ko is the abbreviation of Kosoku-doro, expressways in English). Many of them were constructed about 60 years ago to accommodate the 1st Tokyo Olympic games .

C1 means “Circle 1”. As it stands for, this is the innermost loop . In the past, young reckless guys used this loop as an ideal circuit to boast their driving skills, only to be chased by police cars. Though these expressways turned 60, they remain the important arteries for Tokyo.
