Zakoba underpass connects the east side and the west side of Tamachi Station. This runs under many tracks of JR Lines including Shinkansen and Tokaido Line. Until 30-40 years ago, The west side and the east side of JR Lines were separated, and were connected by several underpasses like this type. In this sense, Zakoba underpass is a historic construction which is still in use.
The name “Zakoba” also has another historic value, which most people in Tokyo do not know. “Zako” is an old Japanese word which means “various fish” . “Ba” means “place” or “space”. Before the industrialization of Tokyo, the space around this underpass was a small port for fishermen. They brought many fish from Tokyo Bay to this space and sold them to merchants. The name of this underpass tells such history to people in Tokyo now.
