There are several shopping arcades around Oimachi, but this arcade is traditionally the most busy one. This arcade starts from Oimachi Station and extends toward the east, with many small shops and restaurants. After several minutes’ walk, shops disappear and the street starts to decline to Route 1 and old Tokaido.
Oimachi is located on the highland close to Tokyo Bay. In Edo era, Tokaido road , the main road from Edo(now Tokyo) to Kyoto(the capital where the Emperor lived at that time) was located along the seashore. But, when the Meiji government decided to construct the 1st railway from Tokyo to Yokohama, they chose the new route which runs on the highland just in the west of Tokaido. That was the starting point of Oimachi town.
