Basho Inari Jinja

Traditional Tokyo

Basho Inari Jinja enshrines Matsuo Basho, probably the most famous Haiku poet in Japan. He lived in early Edo era, in the latter half of 17 century. He was a wandering minstrel (“bard” for French, and “troubadour” for Italian), but still his home base was Edo, and this place was one of his residence.

It is said that probably the most famous Haiku in Japan, ” I heard the sound of frog diving into an old pond “, was created here. That is why there are many frog statues made of stone in this shrine.
