Yanagi-Bashi itself is a small bridge which is located at the mouth of Kandagawa creek which pours into Sumida river. But for people in Tokyo, Yanagi-Bashi is the name of the area around the bridge, and in the past, it was a one-of-a-kind area.
Since Edo era, Yanagi-Bashi had been the area for highest-rank Geisha ladies up until 50 years ago. They embodied the “Iki” culture of Edo era, the culture of people in Edo who looked down on luxury and lived simple and stylish. Now that such days are gone, what reminds us of the heyday are some boats and restaurants under Yanagi-Bashi bridge.
