US Embassy (Embassy of the United States of America in Japan) is located at the hilltop in Akasaka area. Since Commodore Matthew Perry opened Japan’s door by warships in 1854, the US has been a very important country for Japan. In particular, after the defeat for WWII, the US became by far the most important country, including during the occupation period 1945-1952.

it was in 1890 when US Embassy moved to the current site. In 1970s and 80s, many Japanese people ,especially young people, flocked around this building every day to apply for US visa. Now that the US admitted visa waver program for Japanese tourists, and due to the heightened alert level , this area is guarded by many policemen and few people can be seen around there.
