Shinagawa-Shuku means ” Shinagawa lodging village”. In Edo era, Tokugawa Shogunate constructed trunk roads across Japan, and the most important road was “Tokaido” ,which connected Edo (current Tokyo) to Kyoto, then the city where Emperors lived in. Tokugawa Shogunate appointed 53 villages between on Tokaido as “lodging villages” to host travelers or walkers (the only way for people to travel was walking). Shinagawa-Shuku is the very first village among them. The big “Shinagawa train station” was named after this small village.
This is the photo of the present Shinagawa-Shuku and Tokaido. There are many walkers or travelers who follow this old road. The number of them will surely increase now the pandemic is now easing, I believe.
