Sendagi is located in the west of Ueno area , about 30 minutes from Ueno station. After Meiji restoration, this area became the first residential area for middle-to-upper class people who acquired western culture. That is why many famous novels written at that time feature this area. As time goes by, such area moved away to the west, and Sendagi became the town with nostalgic feeling for people in Tokyo.
This photo shows “Yanaka-Ginza”, a shopping mall within Sendagi area. This mall well preserves the atmosphere of shopping malls before high-growth period of Japan 50 years ago. It seems time passes slowly in this area.
