KInokuniya Bookstore is located just one minute walk from Shinjuku Station East gate. Kinokuniya is a famous bookstore chain which has many bookstores all over Japan, like Barnes & Noble in the U.S. Among them, Shinjuku store is the flagship store for Kinokuniya ,not only for its size but also for its history. When it was opened 58 years ago, it was the largest bookstore in Japan. It also has coffee shops, an art gallery, and a theater in its building . This bookstore soon became the icon of Shinjuku culture at that time, and was featured in many movies and novels. Probably there were not so many high-school students studying to enter universities at that time who had not visited this bookstore.
Now people’s way of buying books has dramatically been changed , especially after COVID-19 pandemic. But, even so, people’s love for bookstores seems unchanged, seeing people entering and going out of this bookstore.
