Ohjima

Ohjima is located in Koto Ward, which is located in the east part of Tokyo 23-Ku. When you see this photo, you may feel that the water level of the canal is quite high. Your impression is more accurate than you think. The scene shown in this photo is the highest area in Ohjima : the canal runs at the “ridge” of Ohjima.

Ohjima is in “Zero-meter land”, the elevation of which is below sea level. In modern era, there were many factories which suck out water from land, so the level of the land went down below sea level. In the past people in this area suffered from frequent flood, but now water level is controlled so well that people do not need to worry about flooding.
