Asakusa Rokku is located in a few minutes’ walk to the west from Asakusa Kaminari-mon. But, if I went back to Tokyo 100 years ago, I should have to say “Asakusa Kaminari-mon is located in a few minutes’ walk to the east from Asakusa Rokku”.
Before WWII, Asakusa Rokku was one of the most famous area not only for Tokyo but for Japan. It was the center of amusement and entertainment for common people, with plenty of theaters with rakugos, vaudevilles, and movies. Even after WWII, Asakusa Rokku kept its position for about 10 years, but the advent of television and videos gradually usurped people from this area. Even so, this area still keeps its unique atmosphere even today.
