Historically, the center of Akihabara was on the west side of Akihabara Station, with plenty of electronic parts shops and appliance stores. At that time there was a large freight yard adjacent to Akihabara Station in the east, and beyond the yard was a nondescript downtown .
But after the redevelopment of the former freight yard, not only the yard site but also the area beyond that changed dramatically. Now you can find many shops for geeks, or “Otakus”, in this area. From the standpoint of some Otakus, the east side seems to have surpassed the west side, which can be verified by many people walking in this area.
