Embassy of Russia in Japan is located on Azabu upland, interestingly adjacent to Tokyo American Club. People in Tokyo call the address of this embassy “Iikura”, which is the old name of this area. This fact shows how famous this embassy is for people in Tokyo.
This embassy has a special history in Tokyo. As you can guess , this embassy used to be the Embassy of the USSR until 30 years ago. During cold war era, the USSR was the most critical menace for Japan. At that time, this embassy was often surrounded by crowds of demonstrators who protest against the USSR, which created a hostile atmosphere around this area. But , time passed by, and now the tension has eased a lot .
